MDS comprehensive plan includes:
Employment Support: For advice and representation in issues related to employment. (Traditionally covered by Trade Unions)
Clinical Defence: For Professional Defence against patient complaints and GMC/regulatory matters.
Employment Support and Clinical Defence cover is available for both NHS and private clinical practice.
Indemnity for income from Category 2 work: Category 2 includes work done in the normal course of your employment, which though not deemed as private work, gets remunerated in addition to your NHS work.
Examples of Cat 2 work for GPs include examinations and reports required by a person or third party primarily to serve the interests of the person, his or her employer or other third party, in non-clinical contexts such as insurance, superannuation, foreign travel, or emigration- only if done for patients on the practice list.
This does not include any private procedures (surgical or dermatological) which do not form part of the standard NHS contracted service.
The MDS Comprehensive plan provides you with an insurance backed cover for all category 2 work for gross income upto £5000 per annum for GPs. If your annual income from this work exceeds this amount, contact us to upgrade your cover.
Indemnity Insurance:
You must make sure that you have adequate and appropriate insurance or indemnity arrangements in place, covering the full scope of your medical practice in the UK. For GPs working in England and Wales, this is included in your normal contracts of employment and does not need to be duplicated. For Locum GPs in Wales, you must be registered on the All Wales Locum Register (AWLR). You will still need to maintain membership with an MDO or insurer to cover services such as patient complaints, regulatory (GMC) and disciplinary proceedings, employment and contractual disputes. For more information on the Clinical Negligence Scheme for NHS Trusts and General Practice, refer to the latest GMC guidelines here. For insurance and indemnity when you are carrying out private or independent practice in the UK outside of the NHS or as a GP in Scotland or Northern Ireland, contact us to obtain a tailor-made quotation from our preferred Partners.
